Forty years of the same simple job
Find the thing that suits the person. Wrap it. Send them out of the door feeling like they have got it right.
The Gift Horse has stood in the centre of Holmfirth for forty years. In 2026 we are marking our fortieth anniversary, which is a long time for any independent shop, and a very long time for a shop that sells things nobody strictly needs.
✦
We have never been a chain and we have never been online. What we have been is here: on Huddersfield Road, doors open, through four decades of birthdays, new babies, engagements, apologies, retirements, and the annual Christmas Eve panic that we have come to look forward to.
Holmfirth brings the world to our door. Visitors come over the tops for the valley, the hills and the television history, and a good number of them end up in here looking for something to take home. Locals come in because they have always come in. Both get the same shop.
What has not changed
Independent, and staying that way
Every card, candle and plushie in here was chosen by a person, not an algorithm and not a head office. That is the whole point of us.
It also means we can say yes to things a bigger shop cannot. It is why we are one of a small number of independent Jellycat stockists chosen to offer the official Finders Keepers collection, and why the stock changes every week rather than every season.

Same street. Same job. Forty years of it.
Friday 17 to Sunday 19 July 2026
Forty years is worth a glass
We are throwing the doors open for our 40th anniversary weekend. There will be fizz, there will be a huge prize draw, and there will be forty years of Holmfirth in one small shop.
Friday and Saturday 10am to 5pm, Sunday 11am to 3pm. Nothing to book. If you have been coming in for four decades, or you have never been in at all, the invitation is the same.
Two rooms
Plenty of people never make it downstairs, which is a shame, because that is where the home decor lives. Two rooms, both full.
Things sold online
Everything we have is in the shop. That is deliberate, and it is why it is worth the walk up Huddersfield Road.
Years, and counting
Independent since the start, and still independent. Come and help us make it forty-one.
